Ocean Jasper

Marovato, Madagascar

Ocean Jasper is found along the coastline of northwest Madagascar at low tide. It has the greatest variety of colors of any jasper, and features orbicular patterns, and druzy crystals.  The original main deposit was mined from 1999 until the last stone was taken off that beach in 2006. Small deposits have been found along the coast, and further inland 2013 through current day. Most get mined out quickly. Below is a list of photographs documenting some of the original traits, and dates.

Our Story

We first learned of Ocean Jasper in 1999-2000. I found Eugene, and Paul's websites about the new find in study hall while looking up rockhounding for crystals. It inspired me even more to see what I could find, plus start to get lapidary equipment. We purchased at wholesale shows, and online while selling and trading through the years of the original mine. It was announced the last stone was taken off that beach in 2006.

At least 1 of each variety was saved, or is included in some old photos of what sold.

As the years went on there was mostly white base Ocean Jasper in 2013 & 2014 at Tucson with a few random slabs still available. This gave a reference of what became available 2015 through current day. The list below will show the years purchased, and documented photos. There are old stocks similar to new stock both being from Madagascar. The rarest and highest valued are the original old stock #1 quality from the main companies, lapidary, collectors, and workers during the first 6 years. The specific traits were equivalent to the passion of new collectors in current times for specific types of vein 8. The core roots was the love of all the Ocean Jasper from Madagascar, plus the lapidary community, and connection with family, and friends surrounded the stone since the beginning. Join the Original Facebook Group for Ocean Jasper. The title will only say "Ocean Jasper"

**UPDATE ON THE ENTIRE NEW OCEAN JASPER COMMUNITY 2020-2024**

The original FB Ocean Jasper group "Ocean Jasper" started 2016 by lapidary who sourced #1 quality from Paul & Gene starting in 1999.

Those with over 20 years experience are found there. The original highest graded rough was sourced by those in this group. This was once the only group consisting of a small community of the original Ocean Jasper mine based on the love of lapidary art, and jewelry making. New groups were created in 2023/24 to sell all of the new Chinese sourced orbicular agates to hide the information, and truth from inexperienced buyers outside this group. Fully clear by 2020, these same new sellers, and “collectors” lied about types that weren’t the original variety already documented. Many “collectors” by 2020 were caught ripping off people for their originals to include a few examples of the past with all new orbicular variety, to act like everything mined new is from the depleted mine. They act like it’s old stock, popular veins, or claim China saved tons. Original lapidary don’t recognize the traits of the new stone. In 2020 we were asked to confirm a flood of river jasper, and orbicular agates never seen before, sold by people who didn’t care about the authenticity of the original mining preservation, due to profits being made. As a result, after 4+ years confirming these accounts. This original group will only be for the lapidary, and jewelry artists to post their examples from 1999-2006, and or those who purchased during the original mining eras with proper identification tracing to sources of the trademark owners to preserve the mining history of each. The group can be viewed by anyone who joins to see the photos, and archived info. This way it separates the end of an era by archiving what was studied, and documented by the lapidary for 24 years. The findings have proven the new controlled market elsewhere isn’t trustworthy, and got worse through 2024 with new buyers losing thousands of dollars on new mined stone thinking it’s the few remaining rare examples. It’s the opposite of what the original community of fellow lapidary, and jewelry makers stood for who collectively built the fame of the original Ocean Jasper mine with their cumulative 50 years experience, and passion in the business. Thank you for your support through the years! If you don’t see it in this group from the original buyers, sources, and lapidary. It’s because it’s all of the new mined. It will be clear who’s buying/selling the new orbicular agates, and what they will label it as, when this group was already here since 2016 free for anyone to post in that never had an issue. Until, the arrival of those with new interest in 2020 out to profit on the fame of the original mine by using orbicular agates, and jaspers around the world to sell as if it’s the original.

www.threeriversgems.com/oceanjasper First documentation & preservation of the Trademarked TM#1 quality Marovato mine from The Gemshop Inc. & MM 1st Co. 1999-2006 & vein types that came after. “Old stock” is a stolen term by new sellers that was designated for #1 quality from The Gemshop until 2006 first labeled by Josh Brody. It was meant for the actual pieces saved from the original mining history sailed on the sailboat sourced by the original trademark company, and owner who named Ocean Jasper. If a museum of mining history, and natural science wanted an original authentic saved historic Ocean Jasper, and not just a mock up of getting any orbicular agate from anywhere. There are only the few original lapidary, and those who bought during the original years as known people in the business that saved what would fit with the history of sailed on the sailboats. These lapidary already existed decades before any of the new online sellers came along, and started labeling everything orbicular as "old stock" that the original lapidary already had been offered as new orbicular agate rough sourced by China. The entire community had been notified of all these details, yet the new sellers continue to tag, and label "old stock", or vein 1/2 to make the sale. What most new buyers don't want to realize is that their collections are new stock sourced by China that aren't the original, and are ongoing.  It's only an act by those selling all of the new factory items, rather than just being real, and saying it's all of the new mined orbicular agates. Old Stock Ocean Jasper was only 1999-2006 stone because that's when the original mine was mined out. People wanting to add in new mined orbicular stone as if it's the original would be from 2013 on. That's all new stock because they're new mining locations elsewhere not of the original mining history of the original mine. People who do this is for novelty sales purposes are a facade. Usually these other locations get a new mine name. It's been reported there are 3 new orbicular mines China gets it from. Unless you've really kept track, you might already see the market is flooded with new orbicular agates from all over the world with people claiming it's the original. With the ease of anyone to get a camera phone these days, the market is flooded with anyone who can simply take a photo of a new orbicular jasper, and say it's the original. It's why the new sellers fled elsewhere so their orbicular agates couldn't be identified, after they were offended from being informed what they have is new stock. It's just opportunists wanting to rewrite history for sales. Anyone trying to tell the story of Ocean Jasper who started in 2019 buying all 2013, and later stone is all fantasy cosplay fiction at this point. Most have admitted what they bought was 2013 and later, plus wasn't from the original trademarked company.

2023 New Stock Veinless, Vein 7, 8 the only "veins" since approximately 2022 for the traits of new mined stone from other orbicular deposits. Prior vein terminology didn't exist, and can't be answered by anyone who started way after the original trademark Ocean Jasper mine #1 quality variety was mined out, and sold out by 2006 Tucson. There was only cut 4mm. - 6mm slabs for a short time after before the original Ocean Jasper rough was in ownership by the original lapidary, and jewelry makers of 1999-2006 to continue to slab, and cab to share the love for the stone, and excitement to be part of the lapidary community.

"Old Stock Terminology for Ocean Jasper"

Old stock Ocean Jasper was defined in 2016 by Josh Brody for the #1 grade Trademarked Marovato Ocean Jasper that's the original mining history, and Tucson Mineral Show history of the actual mined Ocean Jasper that was available to those on the wholesale list until 2006.  The newsletter arrived in the mail for lapidary workers, and artists who were paying attention in real time of the original discovery direct from the original trademark owner. The news letter announced the last availability of the specific #1 quality pieces from the original  mine site discovery in Marovato were depleted by 2006. The mined rough stone arrived at the Tucson Mineral show for those who were notified before the general public for first come first serve selection. Many of the new mined top quality went to well known lapidary in the business. The pieces many times puzzle pieced together to see how a large boulder was sledged to be able to lift smaller pieces above the height of the sailboats upper rail, seen in the historic mining discovery photos. Many of the lapidary also mine their own deposits of different stones to understand how a specific mine site can be extracted, and reconstructed once the raw stone pieces are taken off site. By the lapidary listing what some of their favorite examples were from those buying opportunities. The traits on the stones showed they connected from several people who were there buying, that fits with the true mining history, and availability in Tucson of what I defined as old stock.

New sellers who don't have the original copied this terminology incorrectly, or intentionally to sell abundant new mined orbicular agate in all grades from other cities that's been documented 1977 to 1922 as orbicular agate. Dishonest sellers were acting, and encouraging other new business to call it whatever they want as if its the original lapidary's last few historic examples of the original mining, and Tucson Mineral Show history. Ocean Jasper was a name specific for the Marovato deposit traits 1999-2006.

The #1 grade of the original lapidary are the rarest, and highest valued display specimens for the authentic mining history, and lapidary work they all did to make all orbicular stones popular after 20 years of promoting.  Most terminology was came up with by the original lapidary. New opportunists copied the terminology to sell beginners a complex forgery. The "complex forgery" term was came up with by honest new sellers in the business who wanted to get to the bottom of the facade going on describing new online business who sell , and don't care of the true history, or geology who only have a few years experience. Many new sellers from other countries state they don't care about the authenticity, proving what was asked of all along about the true documentation of Ocean Jasper lapidary to find out if new sellers were adding in orbicular agates that were not the original Marovato Ocean Jasper. Many sellers were selling Indonesian River Jasper, and Sea Jasper as Ocean Jasper until they realized that some of us are still paying attention 26 years later. 2020 people wanted to know if an Ocean Jasper was an Ocean Jasper. 2022 veins were invented. New sellers, and buyers questioned, and wanted to know what vein, and if it was old stock asked in the Original Ocean jasper group started in 2016.

2023 scam artist actors reappear online just as China showed they had new orbicular agate mined from another city. Those who bailed from not doing good business returned with saying that China saved all of the stone for them to resell as old stock, and veins. None of it matches the documented history from the lapidary. Chinese sellers who were honest said it's new mined from somewhere else. It showed new sellers were deciding to be dishonest for the money making opportunity to act like every new mined orbicular stone was the last saved few from the original lapidary from 1999-2006 that are the most limited in numbers.  It's why the original lapidary aren't selling palmstones, and factory polished house decorations that were never something available as finished wholesale goods 1999-2006.

A Chinese factory had a buyer pay me to polish the rough stone how I would for a display. The factory started pumping out all the new mined orbicular agate to how I made the display pieces that weren't available as a wholesale item, and wasn't how people were making things in 1999-2006. Back then It was mostly geared towards slabs, and cabs for jewelry thickness because of how high quality the colors, and detail worthy for designer jewelers, and jewelry lovers. There was smaller puck medallions, and rounded smaller palmstone pieces not in grades like they are now. The highest grade pieces were from the lapidary getting first selection of the #1 quality rough that was a specialized category for those prompt paying attention within the lapidary community. Most were in business 20-30 years already, while I was a student paying attention with full interest knowing this is the field I'm inspired in to tune in while it was all happening 26 years ago.
2024- 2026 New sellers say they don't care about the history, or documentation. They said they're going to call whatever they think is pretty whatever labeling, or vein number they want. New honest sellers don't agree with this approach who take great pride in their labeling, and honesty for long term credibility in business.
